Musical Meditations for Christmas Day, 2025
Merry Christmas! After 25 days of Advent, waiting and hoping and expecting, we can fully savor what this spiritual and cultural finally finally brings us. For many of us—I hope most of us—it will be the realization of great joy gathering with family and friends in opening presents, sharing in a sumptuous meal, and sensing how truly good it is to belong with and belong to people whom we love and feel love in return. For some others it will serve as a reminder of loss and separation, making this a sad and lonely day among so many others like it. I suspect for more people than would admit, Christmas will bring with it a tremendous sigh of relief, granting respite from the too-muchness of the modern American end-of-year holiday season. My hope and sincere prayer is that on this day we may somehow become more aware of and awakened to the presence of God in our lives, speaking in our thoughts, informing our decisions, and working through the many opportunities that each new day life gives us to express the love of God and the witness of Christ to others, be they colleagues, neighbors or strangers.
For this Christmas Day I’ve written one final reflection, this one featuring three songs that I trust will not only enhance your Christmas spirit, but help you remain in that spirit well into the new year.
