Daily Meditations for Advent 2025

On Sunday, December 14 we enter Advent’s third week, and with it we find ourselves ever more drawn into the flurry of activities that our culture now drives and depends upon for end of the year profit and social release.  We have decorated our homes, filled our over-booked calendars with school events, parties, church programs and shopping.  From the oldest to the youngest among us it is hard not to get caught up in the excitement and stress of the holiday season.  Yet how many of us have set aside even a few moments to take a deep breath, look around us, count the blessings of family, friends, and freedom?

In “keeping Christmas” as Dickens would put it, what is it that we really keep and savor?  Is Christ’s birth little more than an excuse for us to overindulge our appetites and affections, or do we find that, in hearing these sacred texts and singing these inspired hymns and carols of this holy season, God really is with us in a spirit-uplifting, life-transforming way?  That is my hope and my prayer that all of us may become more aware of and awakened to God’s presence as we reflect on the witness in word and song of those seekers and believers who have blessed us with this wonderful music.
